Sophia Kim

Sophia Kim is a Toronto-based artist working in painting and mixed media. She recently graduated from OCAD University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting and continues to develop her practice through independent studio work and artist assistant roles. Her practice explores the relationship between perception, memory, and lived experience. Drawing from ideas in neuroscience and the psychological processes of memory consolidation, she investigates how sensory experiences are transformed into memory and continuously reconstructed over time. Rather than viewing identity as fixed, her work considers the self as something constantly shaped through perception, experience, and recollection. Working primarily in acrylic, she creates abstract environments that combine geometric structures with atmospheric, dreamlike spaces. Her process begins with digital collage, using photographs from places she has visited, personally meaningful moments, and fragments of everyday experience. By breaking apart and reconstructing these images, she develops layered compositions that are later translated into painting through color, texture, and spatial relationships. Balancing clarity and distortion, her paintings reflect the fluid nature of memory. Where some experiences remain vivid while others gradually dissolve. Through abstraction, she seeks to make invisible cognitive and emotional processes tangible, creating spaces where personal experience intersects with broader questions of perception, memory, and consciousness. She has participated in group exhibitions in Toronto and continues to expand her practice through painting, collage, and mixed media.
